Maine Travel Guide: Maine, the largest and northernmost state in New England, has a rugged, beautiful coast, lush pine forests, and delicious lobsters. It has long been a popular vacation destination for New Englanders. In fact, census statistics (which give the state's population at 1.3 million) are pretty misleading; during the warmer summer months towns in Maine baloon in size as city-slickers flock to their rural getaways. Bar Harbor has, for a long time, been an upscale retreat, but lost this status somewhat in 1947 when a fire destroyed a large part of the town. It's still the place to find Chanel, Gucci and all your other favorite sartorial luminaries. Kennebunkport is a popular seaside tourist destination and famous as the summer home of President H. W. Bush. Portland is Maine's largest city, with Bates and Bowdoin colleges nearby. This is the place to look for larger museums and music venues. But what Maine does best is serene seaside relaxation, and this activity goes famously well with one of Maine's most famous exports: lobster.
